PREFACE

In South Korea, when a difference between generations are found such as parents not knowing the latest k-pop group, there is a phrase that is said: "세대차이 난다" known as 'generation gap' or 'generation difference' in English. I heard this phrase many time through out my life talking to my parents, my aunts, on T.V, etc. I thought this project would be a good chance for me to find out why this phrase is used so often. Thus, I came up with the question: "In South Korea, how do teenagers of my generation (the present) differ from the generation of teenagers of my parents (the past)?" I wanted to find out what makes these differences and whether these differences were positive or negative. South Korea has a relatively short history, only about fifty years, since the civil war between the North and South separated. However, during that short period of time, South Korea was able to develop greatly economically and become a strong nation. South Korea is known for exports of shipment, cars, electronics, computer chips, etc. The education system also developed rapidly; many awards are received internationally at math, science, and other field competitions.
